Fifty-five teams, with every player wearing a LAF yellow wristband, contributed to a good cause in the Second Annual LAF Benefit held on January 7 & 8 at Victory Lane. Perfect weather and great competition made the LAF Benefit a great success. In the second year, the LAF Benefit has become so popular that six teams were unable to get in because of field space limitations. Gabe Medina's LOS DIABLOS started the New Year off right with a 4 - 0 record in the DII Division, while AGE MATTERS coached by Matt Webb finished with a 4-1 record. Both teams received identical First Place awards. BUMPS had a strong showing finishing in Third Place while JOKERS coached by Rosemary Madron placed Fourth. The D Championship went to Art Armendariz's II the LIMIT team over CHICONKIES from Buckeye, who came in Second. Third Place went to TEAM CHAOS coached by Steve McGill. In the E Division, THE OTHER GUYS stayed hot by defeating STAY SMASHIN' who took Second Place. STROKIN' coached by Ron Proffitt came in a close Third Place. In the Women's Division I, SMOKE'M coached by Terri Siemer had to go extra innings to defeat LADY LEGION who finished Second. The Women's Hispanic World Champion, TOUCH 'EM ALL team coached by Dena Gonzales won the Women's Division II Division. DOWNTOWN PAINT & BODY came all the way from Prescott to finish Second. There were three Divisions in the Coed portion of the tournament, which was played on Sunday only. In the Division I, DIABLOS finished in First Place over TEAM BOHICA. In Division II, Jeff Marine's JACKED UP beat out a very good CITY BOYZ & GIRLZ team. In Division III, DOC'S from Wilcox defeated Tony Barrella's YARD DOGS BOYS & GIRLS who finished Second. Metro Phoenix Hispanic Director, Leon Rodriguez stated that, "The LAF tournament was a good way to start out 2006 with a great draw from teams through out Arizona competing in many closely contested games. I think all the teams enjoyed the LAF free wristbands and contributing to a worthy cause." In 2006, the following Tournament Sports Tournaments will offer paid berths to the ASA NATIONALS:
The ASA NATIONAL POINTS SERIES tournaments are a series of tournaments run in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington that will award top prizes of paid rooms and an ASA National Berth to the point champions in each division. Also new in 2006, on May 20 & 21, Tournament Sports will offer the Las Vegas Challenge Cup in Las Vegas. Details and flyer will follow. Congratulations to all the winning teams and thanks to all the teams for playing ASA and donating to the LAF Foundation. We hope to see you later this year. |
