
The first leg of WORTH'S Triple Grand Slam went off without a hitch on March 18 and 19 at Victory Lane and Papago Sports Complexes. An 80 team field of Men's, Women's and Coed teams competed for the available berths on the road to the Championships which will be held on September 23 & 24 at Victory Lane and Papago Parks.
Teams from Chicago, New Mexico, Tucson, Yuma, Kingman, Gila Bend and Wickenburg came to the Valley of the Sun to compete for a chance at the Triple Grand Slam $25,000 award package.
In the Triple Grand Slam Series, teams receive awards as usual but as a bonus $50 from each team's entry fee is deposited into an award fund and divided up among the First, Second and Third Place teams in the Championships. The Triple Grand Slam Series tournaments fill up so quickly that there is always a waiting list to enter. Every team must qualify to play in the Championships. In 2005 over $12,000 in award money was given back to the winning teams at the Championships. In the first leg of the Triple Grand Slam, Stormy Weber elected to divide her burgeoning 21 team Women's tournament into three divisions. In Division I, Lady Legion continued their winning ways by taking the Championship with a 4-1 record. The Other Team from Chandler took Second Place while Kaddywhompas finished in Third Place.
Get Dirty, Shelly Gonzales' New Mexico team, captured the Championships in Division II. The Second Place team was Face First coached by Ray Winn with a 3 - 1 record. Getten Loose from Tolleson finished Third.
In the Women's Division III, Becky Felix's AZ Sports team finished First. The two teams from Chicago, Chicago Blizzard and Out of Control finished in Second and Third.
In the Men's D Division, Luke, coached by Chris Tipton, won First Place with a perfect 4-0 record and Mike Trychon's, Roster Check team finished with a 5-2 record. Hispanic World Champions, Tantarant's on their first outing in 2006 finished in Third Place .
In the DII Division Stay Faded coached by David Montano captured the trophy while Outlaws, also from Tucson took Second Place.
Dugan La Rose's Eckstinkt team traveled from Yuma to win the EI Division while Frankie's Misioneros team finished in Second. In the EII Division, All Juiced Up coached by Mike Pilkington finished in First Place over Stay Smashin' from Phoenix.
The 22 team Coed Division divided into 4 Divisions was played entirely on Sunday which kept all the teams moving to finish in one day. Scott Manning's, Lost Cause team took the Coed I Division over Team Bohica coached by Rick Bevington
In the Coed II Division, Get Over It coached by Mike Zaitz defeated Mixed Nuts in a closely contested contest. In the Coed III Division, Rob Kepers DeRailed team took First Place with a perfect record over Chaos.
The Coed Division IV Champions came down to a battle between the two Windy City teams with Chicago Blizzard #2 taking the trophy from the Chicago Blizzard #1.
Special thanks to Victory Lane for providing free pizza to all teams and to all five of the Chicago teams that traveled from Chicago to provide out of state competition for the Arizona teams.
The Triple Grand Slam Series, with a total award package of over $25,000, is a partnership between Worth Sports, Victory Lane and Tournament Sports bringing a quality Championship event to the Arizona Sports area. The top 8 teams in each of the Men's Divisions and the top 6 in the Coed and the Women qualify to play in the TRIPLE GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONSHIPS on September 23 & 24. The Second Leg of the Triple Grand Slam will be held on June 10 & 11 at Victory Lane and Papago parks.
Upcoming tournaments include the Pat Tillman Benefit on April 22 & 23 and the first COORS LIGHT ASA National Points Series in Arizona on April 29 & 30. The ASA Point Series already has several inquiries from California and Texas. The Second Leg of the ASA Point Series will be held in Las Vegas on May 20 & 21. The ASA Point Series is a partnership of the ASA Pacific Coast region states that offers the point winners paid rooms to the ASA National Championship in their respective division.
