On Sunday October 31st, at Victory Lane Sports Complex, the Co-ed State Champions were finally crowned. The NSA Co-ed State began on Saturday September 18th and a rare Arizona rainstorm blew in on Saturday night and washed out all of the scheduled Sunday September 19th's games. On Sunday morning, Oct. 31st, 24/7 (Phoenix), Triple Play (Phoenix) and Hicks & Chicks (Peoria) were victorious. 24/7 went into the championship game against JWP (Mesa) as the undefeated team. JWP forced the "IF" game by defeating 24/7 by a score of 13-12, leaving the tying and winning runs on 2nd & 3rd in the bottom of the seventh inning. 24/7 came back in the "IF" game to defeat JWP 17-8 to walk off with the division crown. The tournament MVP's were Bobby Uhl and Vayola Palados of 24/7 and Jose Baruelos of JWP. The all-tournament team; Efren Gonzales, Sharon Ragley and Jill Frick from 24/7; Melissa Piekarski, Natasha Greco and Henry Gonzales of JWP; Gabe Gutierrez, Stewart Cummings and Crystal Hoya from the 3rd place City Boyz & Girlz (Phoenix); Raul Borquez, Arlene Borquez and Bobby Camargo of the 4th place Krusty Krew (Tucson). Triple Play went undefeated winning the championship Game over Santisi Brothers (Glendale) by a 19-11 score. Santisi Brothers jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first inning but were unable to finish off Triple Play. Santisi's still held an 11-9 lead going into the bottom of the 6th when Triple Play put up a 10 run inning to finish off the game. The MVP's for the White division were Nikk Valverde and Janette Hernandez of Triple Play and Rich Lugo from Santisi Brothers. The all-tournament team; Toni Leanhauser, Lee Schwartz and Juliette Martinez from Triple Play; Pam Hopkins, Mark Hagan and Tom Boyll of Santisi Brothers; three all tourney awards were given to 3rd place Cutthroats (Glendale). Hicks & Chicks were also forced to the "IF" game to over come Got Game (Mesa) by the score of 20-14. After Hicks & Chicks were 0-2 in the round robin portion of the tournament they came back in the double elimination round as the undefeated team before being run ruled 20-4 in the championship game. Got Game took the toughest route of all getting to the final game. They were 0-2 in the round robin portion and then lost their first game of the double elimination, having to come back through the losers bracket to force an "IF" game. The Red division MVP's were Kory Gillaland and Kim Stoffers from Hicks & Chicks and Paul Horner of Got Game. The Red all-tourney selections; John Vanasse, Rob Iler and Tammy Lagrow of Hicks & Chicks; Janny York, Amanda Cannon and Brendan O'Connor from Got Game; Marco Duran, Jenn Garcia and Gabe Valencia with 3rd place G Crew (Peoria); Robert Belt and Tina Martinez from 4th place Lost Cause (Scottsdale). Director's Craig and Joan Lawson of NSA/Tournament Sports greatly appreciate all the teams, coaches, and their families for participating and making this a great Co-ed State Championship. NSA and Tournament Sports extend thanks to the management and employees of Victory Lane Sports Complex. With Victory Lane's help all the NSA State Tournaments were great competitive softball events. NSA ARIZONA looks forward to the 2005 season. THANKS AGAIN ! |
